The Enthusiast goes to Santarchy 2012!

Christmas time in San Francisco brought with it the epic pub crawl known as Santarchy. People from all around flocked to the city dressed in seasonal attire and got their drink seriously on. Here are but a few of the moments we captured. See even more on our Facebook page.

East coast trip final leg: Alumni Weekend

—Christian

Our trip culminated in a return to my alum mater, Vermont Academy, located in the small village of Saxton’s River. VA is a great little school at which I spent three of my formative years and met some really wonderful people. That was ten years ago.

Second story corner room of Jones Hall, where it all went down.

East coast trip days 6 & 7 & 8: Drinking at the in-laws’ in rural Vermont

—Josey

This is Vermont, near where Christian’s folks live. Yep, that bitchin’ car there is a lifted station wagon. Note also the fall colors. Did you know looking at orangish leaves in New England is in itself a pastime? I know, weird, right? (I know my fellow Californians feel me on that.) Well it gets better, cause this pastime is known as LEAF PEEPING. I seriously don’t even know where to begin with that and no it is NOT just me, that shit sounds perverted as all hell. Read more »

East Coast trip days 4 & 5: Drinking in New Jersey and Boston

—Josey

After some quality bagels and smoked sea life we departed New York City on Sunday afternoon for New Jersey to visit with my grandmother, aunt and uncle, and various cousins and second cousins. We ate some tasty dinner with the fam then headed out to explore for our first time nightlife at the Jersey shore. Aware of this blog, my cousin Jason recommended we check out Porta National Park, a restaurant and bar in nearby Asbury Park.

The famous pink drink.

East Coast trip day 3: A story in which we eat bagels at the end

—Josey

It wouldn’t be an Enthusiast morning-after without a raging case of the drunk creepies and at least a couple angry texts about something we straight don’t remember doing. Come on. Y’all know exactly what we’re talking about. ANYWAYS… so we had some albeit-hazy fun last night and we started our day with brunch at Great Jones Cafe, recommended to us by our dear old friends Hatter and Adina as much for the delicious food as for their liquor license. Uncharacteristically early, we enjoyed several hot sauce-doused Bloodies at the bar before our friends arrived and we proceeded to enjoy several more at our table. And also some like, eggs and stuff.

We drank Bloodies while experiencing for the first time what waiting on late(ish) friends is like.

East coast trip day 2: About town

—Christian

Disclaimer: I did not do as a good of a job documenting our beverages this time around. For various reasons.

After our run we met with my cousin and her husband at Momofuku Noodle Bar for lunch. Needless to say, it was amazing. And they had a local, hop-heavy brew on tap that was delectable.

Later on we met with some of Josey’s coworkers at the NYC office and they took us to The Flatiron Lounge. This place is legit. You walk in through an arched hallway into an impossibly dim room decked out in ’20s decor. We were led to a couple tables along the wall with a great view of the bar. The menu is organized by liquor and covers three full pages. Between the four of us we made out way through eight of the cocktails, all amazing in their own right. Read more »

East coast trip day 1: First night out

—Christian

We determined we would take it easy our first night in town. We are San Francisco health-nuts after all and wanted to run in the morning. So of course we stayed out until 3:00am and got wasted.

Cafe Orlin: Pinto Noir and the Maple Manhattan

Upon arrival in the East Village we had a great dinner at Cafe Orlin, accompanied by a great glass of Oregon Pinot and what they dubbed the “Maple Manhattan,” a very well-balanced combination of bourbon, lemon maple syrup and salt (the “secret ingredient”). Being from Vermont I obviously had to order this. Read more »

East coast trip day 1: Arrival

—Christian

Drinks on a plane!

The Enthusiasts have crossed the country and just arrived in New York City. Our hearts may be in San Francisco, but our livers came along for the ride and are already warmed up from what was left of the 50ml bottles on our flight.

Unfortunately, this trip did conflict with SF Cocktail Week, the annual cross-bay celebration of mixology devised by the guys at the The Barbary Coast Conservancy of the American Cocktail. So while we’re missing out on some epic bar battles and loads of spirit samplings, I’m confident we can make up for it at the various dives, pubs, saloons and “secret” speakeasies this little island has to offer. We may even venture across a bridge or two to see what’s shaken in the boroughs. Read more »

Christian’s Reno birthday

Anyone who claims to “hate Reno” has never been to Reno with your humble Enthusiasts. It was an amazing weekend and we can’t wait to go back! Here are a few of the photos.

We started the weekend at the rodeo. This is before we got escorted out by six marshalls because they thought we were underage…? Read more »

Fairfax Festival 2012

—Christian

Last weekend was Fairfax Festival and your humble enthusiasts made the annual pilgrimage up to Josey’s hometown to celebrate. For those who don’t know, Fairfax Festival is a town-wide party kicked off with a parade on Saturday morning (which our Friday night activities unfortunately precluded this year) and music both indoor and out through Sunday evening. We arrived late, but still got there in time to enjoy some of the regional brew.
